Carleton University Butterfly Show 2011

Sorry, there is no photo of the day today, but instead I bring you some of my shots from the Carleton University Butterfly Show 2011. This year I decided to go on the first day of the event, which happened to be this past Saturday. Unfortunately, it seems everyone else in Ottawa had the same idea. The place was packed, which made being in the perfect spot for photography almost impossible. I also really wanted to get some great macro shots, so I ended up using my Kenko Extension Tubes the whole time, but in doing so I ended up going TOO macro and some of the butterflies would not entirely fit in the viewfinder. I should have also stopped down a lot more to get much more depth of field. If I get a chance I'll have to go back when there are less people to get some more shots, but for now here are some of the ones I was happy with.

Canada Day 2011 - Fireworks

I wanted to get a different angle on the fireworks this year for Canada Day, so when my friend Jeff mentioned the corktown bridge as a possible location I thought it would work perfectly. It has a great view of the Rideau Canal, the Peace Tower, and Chateau Laurier. It did turn out to be a good spot for the fireworks, except for a few little issues. Normally they fire off the fireworks as far west as they can so that they explode over the water and behind the Parliament, however there was a fair bit of wind from the west keeping the fireworks from getting out from behind the building on the right side of my shot. Another issue is that a pedestrian bridge is probably not the best location for long exposures. The bridge was packed full of people and as the group would move, so too would the bridge. Even with my tripod many of my shots were too shaky to use since the bridge itself was bouncing up and down. Well, lesson learned. It was a great spot indeed, but other factors kept it from being the perfect spot.

Canadian Tulip Festival 2011

The Canadian Tulip Festival has been in full swing for the past few weeks. There are still very many tulips in full bloom throughout the city, so even though the festival officially ends today, the tulips are here to stay for at least a little while longer. Carleton University's Butterfly Show 2010

Last week I got a chance to visit Carleton University's annual Butterfly Exhibit and I was amazed by how many butterflies there were dancing all around me. There were so many different shapes, sizes and colours that it was a blast to try and photograph each one. They were quite difficult to shoot because they do not stay very still for long, and I guess all the little kids running around trying to catch them dident help, but it did make it more fun! I ended up using my Canon 70-200mm with a 2X teleconverter most of the time, which helped me stay back far enough to not scare them away, yet give me the zoom power to get some tight shots.
